Weight Loss

Each one of us knows when we are overweight. It is constantly on our mind. We are not only uncomfortable about how we look but also how we feel. Our weight problem can become a very depressing issue for us. We are usually very conscious about how we look and how others see us. How many times have walked into a supplement store and asked for information about weight loss, fat-burning or muscle-building supplements? How many times have you bought the latest best-selling diet book? How many television infomercials have you watched a weight loss or fitness expert promote the latest and best diet and equipment? Finally, how many hours have you spent surfing the web for information about diet, nutrition or weight loss programs.

No one likes to be lied to. But, if you have done any of the above then the chances are you’ve been told many weight loss lies!

There is a serious problem we all encounter today when it comes to collecting information. There is an over-load of information available to us, especially on the Internet. The problem lies with the fact that we have to discern which information is reliable and which is not. Not all the material we access is based on scientific research. Honest, accurate information about nutrition and weight loss is harder to come by than ever before, and nearly everyone has been misled at one time or another. This may of course be that the so called guru thinks that the information they are giving is correct and may have been misled themselves. But to ensure that you are receiving or giving accurate and honest weight loss information you need to look very carefully at the scientific evidence surrounding the weight loss claims

One of the areas of the body that seems to attract fat without question is the mid-section: our belly. Many of us who need to lose weight are probably concerned mainly with these extra pounds we put on around our waistline. If you are a regular dieter then you will no doubt be familiar with this annoying problem of belly fat. Belly fat has become the dieters curse. No matter how successful your weight loss program has been undoubtedly you will be left with the problem of stubborn belly fat. This is particularly frustrating for women who are looking for that slim-line figure, but no matter how hard you try the problem persists.

Ask a man and he will tell you it doesn’t matter what sex you are, male or female, it is difficult to lose weight. Ask a woman the same question and she’ll tell you that it is much harder for women to lose weight. Unfortunately women are born with more fat cells than men, mainly for the purpose of protecting and nourishing our babies. So weight loss, especially the removal of that stubborn mid section fat, can actually be a lot harder for women than for men.

Male or female, we all want fast results. We just want to see the extra weight come off quickly. It is a strong motivation for us when we see weight loss results right from the start. Especially getting rid of that bloated belly can be a great incentive for most people. Better to get rid of it from the start than be left with it at the end of your diet.

Many of us want to know why it seems that most of the extra weight we gain appears to head straight for the waistline or belly area? Inflammation caused by foods your body is intolerant to is one of the main reasons for a bloated belly, especially if that belly is of the pot belly variety. Inflammation and excess gas caused by undigested food particles can be a major cause of both inflammation and a bloated belly. Most people who have been on a weight loss diet will be familiar with the term water retention and although this can often be more prevalent in the ankles and other joints it can also be a contributory factor for a swollen midsection . For weight loss to take place it is advisable to address these underlying intolerances first, especially if you want to have a flat belly rather than a fat belly. You will then feel that your weight loss program will be much more successful.

Weight Loss Stories – Fact or Fiction

People enjoy talking about themselves, so when they have a good story to tell you should be ready to listen. And people just love to tell a weight loss story after they have been successful at losing some of those unwanted pounds. Anybody who has had to seriously lose weight will have their own story to tell. It is relatively easy to ascertain which are genuine and which are out right scams, especially if you know the right questions to ask.

As individuals we often learn from others and so it is with weight loss. Weight loss stories have an importance of their own in that they can inspire other people to lose weight. So in fact an honest weight loss story can save someone’s life and that’s not an exaggeration; it is a statement of fact. Many of these people have made huge sacrifices and life changes to achieve their goal and seeing their success in real terms is very helpful to others who are in a similar situation.

Listening to the success of others with their weight loss achievements can be a strong motivational tool. Weight loss success stories can easily inspire, but it is vital to keep in mind that you won’t achieve your target weight tomorrow, next week or next month. But every day that you stick to your plan and make changes to your eating habits, you are one day closer to your target and one day closer to a healthier you

One does not have to look hard to find some inspiring weight loss stories. There are many success stories available if you join a program like Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. These companies love to tell the world about their successful clients, no doubt to make themselves look great but also to inspire everyday people to reach their goals. Absolutely anyone can achieve their weight loss goals, regardless of how much you weigh now. People have regained control of their life from all sorts of difficult circumstances, including weighing several hundred pounds! So there is no reason why you can’t follow on their footsteps. You have to believe in yourself and really want to lose weight. Remember the mind plays a very important role in any weight loss program.

Finally, there is one very important fact to remember. You’ll never lose a single pound unless you take action. If you plan on achieving weight loss you’ll have to do something about it. It is easy to be inspired by others weight loss success stories, but it isn’t always as easy to follow their example. Determination and self control will help you to achieve your dream of being slim. In the end its up to you.

Weight Loss

Turn on your television set, open any magazine or just surf the Internet. Weight Loss is becoming a massive industry, not only for the health services around the world but also for “big business”. The “average Joe” who thinks they will jump on the latest bandwagon to make some money. Unfortunately due to the fact that there are many fad diets out there that promise unrealistic results, many desperate dieters will find themselves constantly moving from one diet to another to find the one that offers then lasting success.

Be honest with yourself when you answer this question. Are you a weight loss yoyo-er? Do you lose weight only to put it back on again time after time? Perhaps you even put more weight on than before and your weight is gradually creeping up higher and higher and you don’t know what to do about it. Well it may help you to know that you are not alone in this and weight loss yoyo-ers are on the increase.

We are confusing our body when we are constantly gaining weight and then going through a regimen to lose it. Once you get into the cycle of weight off – weight on, your body, not surprisingly, seems to be unsure of how it should react. Once upon a time your body had a set point, a weight that was the norm for you. With repeated weight gain followed by weight loss followed by weight gain etc etc, your body is constantly changing that set point until it is at a higher rate than you would like it to be. It can then be very difficult to attain the weight loss you so desire. Your body plateaus and any further weight loss seems like an impossibility. When this happens we often we get frustrated and disheartened and give up on the weight loss diet thinking it isn’t working. This inevitably results in our weight starting to increase once again to an unacceptable level.

Obviously, confusing the body in its attempt to function properly is not healthy. So what can you do to re regulate your set point? First and foremost, it is important to realize that you are going to have to be far more persistent in your approach to weight loss. One of the reasons you find it difficult to sustain your weight loss is because your adrenal glands have become exhausted. Very often when you have been on a weight loss diet month after month, perhaps not following a well structured diet, maybe cutting calories or missing meals or eating too many carbohydrates, your body is constantly in a fight or flight state. This situation will inevitably leave you tired confusing your metabolism and encouraging it to turn to stimulants such as tea, coffee, and diet drinks as a pick me up to compensate for what may well have been an energy deficient diet. Unfortunately this just activates the sympathetic nervous system to release more stress hormones which in turn requires more stimulants and so the cycle goes on and weight loss becomes less and less likely. This vicious circle can be almost impossible to break without professional help.

It seems we all know someone who appears to be constantly on some type of diet. In my experience people who have been on a “not so healthy” weight loss diet will inevitably have lost some muscle as well as fat. As muscle burns energy this will not help your weight loss regime as a decreased muscle mass means a lower metabolic rate. Yet another vicious cycle your body has to find a way to break. This increases your chances gaining weight rather than losing weight and so the yoyo effect continues.

Some people view the weight loss industry with pure skepticism. As I said at the beginning of this article, the weight loss industry is big business and it is not in their interest for you to lose weight forever. This may be a hard pill to swallow, but sadly it is true. If everybody lost weight easily and permanently there would be no weight loss industry and many people would be out of a job. If you want to know if your weight loss plan is a good one then it needs to have a good scientific explanation so that you are certain it is going to work to not only help you to lose weight but also the gain health. If it sounds amazing, maybe too good to be true, then it is probably a fad diet that will do nothing to help you to achieve permanent weight loss

For those of us who have a weight problem it is a very serious issue which we must address. It is not something to “play” with. Your future health is dependant on you losing weight so take your diet seriously. If weight loss has been an issue for you for many years then it would be advisable to get the advice and support of a professional weight loss coach who can monitor your progress. You need to be patient and remember it has probably taken you many years to become over weight particularly if you have been a weight loss yoyo-er, so it is likely take time to crack the cycle and achieve permanent weight loss. Remember also that tackling your weight loss problem also means that you are improving your overall health.

The bottom line for us as individuals and as a society is the fact that our health is the most important thing and we want to maintain it. There is no point in looking forward to early retirement and all the enjoyable things that freedom can bring if you haven’t got the health to make the most of them

Weight Loss Tips

Ask just about anyone who has had to lose weight and they will more than likely tell you it is one of the most difficult things they have ever done. If you have ever tried to stick to a weight loss diet you know for yourself how hard it can be. Dieting takes some dedication and lots of personal discipline. Sometimes we can end up back where we started or worst still even putting on a few more pounds. Here are some suggestions to help you to lose a few pounds without losing interest.

1) Do not totally give up all of the food you like. You certainly have to get rid of the unhealthy choices but that can be a process in itself. Cutting out all the foods that you love can be a difficult thing to do so try to eat lower calorie versions of them as you develop a taste for healthier choices. Go for the low fat and low sugar versions and make sure the low fat version isn’t loaded with sugar. You also need to make sure that the low sugar version hasn’t had the sugar replaced with sweeteners as this can be even worse if weight loss is your goal.

2) If you want to reduce your weight then you should reduce your portion sizes. Many people try to achieve weight loss but fail to adjust the amount of food they eat. Are your portion sizes far too big? The larger the portions the more calories you are consuming and more calories means the likelihood of a few extra pounds. Try putting your food on a smaller plate.

3) Exercising is important but it can be difficult, not to mention boring. To help here, never think of exercise as being exercise. Instead, look at it in a different way. For example, you could go swimming or walking with a friend and think of it as just a pastime instead a way of achieving weight loss.

4) If you have been on a diet you know that it seems like you just are not getting enough food into your body. It’s almost as if weight loss diets make you feel like you are denying yourself foods. Instead of thinking this way add new foods to your diet such as interesting fruits and vegetables. When people think of diets they think of having to go without, but, in this case you are adding instead of taking away.

5) Don’t want to join a gym and be burdened with scheduling the time to go and sweat of the pounds? If you don’t like the idea of exercise then just go walking whenever you can, walking is a great form of exercise and many people don’t class it as exercise. You can also try to go up and down stairs more often or maybe get outside and do some gardening. Your weight loss will be enhanced when you embark on some exercises so don’t ignore this important part of your regime

6) Do you have difficulty eating less at meal time even though you know you have to do it? Try a little water before your main meal. Drink one or two glasses of water at least 25 minutes before you plan to sit down to eat. This will help you to feel full and therefore you will eat less

Finally, an important part of your plan must be patience. Things take time and so it is with losing weight. Be patient when it comes to achieving your weight loss. Don’t try to lose too much weight all at once and realize that once you have lost the weight you will have to keep up with your healthier lifestyle to ensure you don’t put it all back on.

Even with all the medical and scientific advances being made by man, we are fast becoming a very sick and unhealthy population. With all these advances in modern medicine we could be forgiven for assuming that our health should be improving whereas the truth of the matter is our health in this day and age is far worse than any other time in recorded history! There is no doubt that sickness affects us directly, causing untold suffering and hardship.

The number of people with chronic conditions is growing at an alarming rate. In the year 2000, the U.S. population was 276 million. Nearly half of the population — 125 million Americans — lived with some type of chronic condition. And what is shocking is the fact that this does not include the over-weight and obese people, who are trying and failing in their attempts at weight loss. About 60 million people lived with multiple chronic conditions. Examples of chronic conditions are diabetes, cancer, glaucoma and heart disease. So Why Are We Sick?

There are many who will disagree, but our epidemic of poor health is economically profitable for a lot of big companies and their shareholders. It may appear to be cynical but poor health is big business. Consider the following:

* The food industry with all the ‘designer’ junk foods and beverages that hold no nutritional value and actually make us fat(overweight) and sick.

* All the polluting industries that fill our lives and bodies with harmful chemicals and toxins.

* The ’sick care’ industry that figured out long ago that there’s a lot more money to be made in treating symptoms with drugs and surgeries in expensive hospitals than in patient education, prevention and natural medicine and weight loss.If you wish to lead a healthy life it is important to realize that you need to take responsibility for the food you eat. We live in an age of fast food, canned food, frozen food, packaged food, and many other types of processed and ‘convenience foods’. All this food is intended to cater for the modern stressful lifestyle we are all leading. You need to educate yourself to understand the effects that processed foods can have on your health and also for those who are obese the effect processed food can have on your weight loss.

Today food manufacturers are required to list ingredients on all labels, but many people don’t understand what most of the information means. Foods that are now termed partially hydrogenated vegetable oils contain trans fats, which are harmful. Trans fats increase the bad cholesterol (LDL) and deplete the good cholesterol (HDL) levels. They make arteries rigid and clog them, resulting in heart problems. They cause insulin resistance and contribute to Type 2 diabetes. Trans fats pose a serious overall health risk, much more serious than saturated fats found in meat and dairy products. Don’t be tempted by their claims to improve weight loss.

With our rushed society we are looking for the quick way to get things done, even our meal preparation. It can be very tempting to buy processed foods that state that they are “low-calorie” or “healthy” or “diet” or “low sugar” and so on. Despite their labels, they are probably more likely to add to your weight problems and your health risks. Even ready-to-eat meals supplied by the food outlets that seem to make your life comfortable and easy may have used processed food products, so be wary particularly if weight loss is what you are aiming for

We have to effectively change our eating habits. We should depend more on fresh foods, and not be discouraged just because they are a little more expensive. Eat wholesome fresh foods in the interest of maintaining good health and ensuring healthy weight loss.

There are hundreds of weight loss programs and diets that may sound like the answer to your weight loss prayers. I have to sympathise. There is a minefield of information out there, and no foolproof way of knowing what works and what doesn’t. More importantly there is no way of knowing if the diet is one that enables you to lose weight and then keep it off. It is always a good idea to find out if the diet has a scientific basis for its claims and whether there have been any significant trials done to ascertain if people have been able to maintain the weight loss efffectively.

Here’s a good question for you. Did you know that you can achieve weight loss by eating a diet high in a particular type of fat? This fat is called a MUFA – monounsaturated fatty acid. MUFA’s are the good fats you find in food like peanuts, olive oil and avocados. Research has demonstrated that MUFA’s help to seek out and erase your belly fat. They all also have an additional health benefit in that they help to lower your cholesterol levels in your blood and lower your risk of heart disease and strokes. Other studies have shown that MUFA’s can also help fight diabetes. Keep your artery walls smooth and untarnished and control your blood sugar levels. Not only do MUFA’s target your belly fat, but experts believe they prevent and even eliminate central fat distribution in your body which will ultimately help you to lose weight.

One of the most difficult realities of trying to lose some weight is that most diets used in a weight loss program may leave you feeling unsatisfied and hungry. The higher fat content provided by the MUFA’s will have the effect of satisfying your appetite for longer. As a result you will be less likely to want to snack and also be less likely to have sugar cravings.

To encourage your body to lose weight more effectively, it is a good idea to have some sort of exercise program in addition to your diet high in MUFA’s. With as little as 10 minutes of exercise the brain begins to produce beta endorphins, chemicals that calm you down, regulate your stress hormones and make you feel good. A recent study at the Ivy League university demonstrated that the secretion of beta-endorphins can actually offset the belly bloating effects of cortisol and insulin. An exercise plan that will help you achieve weight loss will take no longer than 25 minutes a day. The plan consists of three parts:-

1. A cardio component that can be as easy as walking

2. A strength training program to build lean muscle

3. A Pilates -based workout that is excellent for building your core strength

A combination of the above will provide all you need for a successful tried and tested weight loss regime

The numbers are constantly climbing with regards to overweight adults. Sadly, the same holds true for children. More and more children are overweight and if steps are not taken to reverse this trend, these children will become overweight adults. We are well aware of the medical problems associated with being overweight, such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. People have to start taking weight loss more seriously when it comes to their children, or they may have a variety of medical problems waiting for them as they get older.

One of the best things you can do as a parent to help your child control their weight is to become more educated on this topic. The more you learn about food and nutrition the better you can provide the correct foods for your child. As you learn your child will also learn and hopefully they will make the right choices with respect to a well balanced diet. It is so much easier to educate and make good choices rather than have to start a weight loss program to get rid of excess weight.

Most children have not reached the point of having to be placed on a weight loss plan that is too restrictive. Weight can be controlled by following a sensible diet of healthy foods and a moderate exercise program. It will take some discipline on your part as well as your child if weight loss is your goal. It may be difficult to break bad or unhealthy eating habits but it must be done if a healthy weight is to be maintained. Many children have become too inactive and do not burn up enough calories during their regular daily activities. It makes sense that if a child consumes more food and calories than they actually burn up in the course of a day, they will put on weight. The calories that are not used up they are converted to fat cells and stored for future burning. The problem is that too many get stored plus not enough activity results in more weight.

One of the biggest problems confronting children who need to achieve some weight loss is motivation. This is where you as a parent play an important role. Many children fail to grasp the importance of eating healthy, especially when there is so many good tasting yet unhealthy foods available. And most of these foods are processed so a few seconds in the microwave oven and they have a meal. Quick and easy but not the healthiest choice. Help your child be motivated and become part of the process. You have to take part and make their weight loss efforts a part of your day as well.

It is no easy task in trying to help a child achieve weight loss and maintain a healthy body weight. They have so many temptations when it comes to unhealthy, yet tasty, food choices. Remember, they are still children and will need guidance. Make sure you become educated with regards to food and nutrition. If we keep feeding our children the unhealthy foods they will continue to be overweight and their chances of developing medical problems will also continue to rise. We can prevent all of this by educating ourselves and our children about how to make the right choices when it comes to weight management and weight loss.

Body Type and Weight Loss – What do they have in common?

Did you know that your body type is a scientific classification of your overall body shape, and is determined by a combination of certain physical characteristics. Your genes determine your body type therefore, your body shape will develop from birth to adulthood. Body types can never be changed and no matter what type you possess, you can still achieve weight loss relatively quickly with the correct choices of food and tactics for weight loss or weight control. Its all about balance and following a sensible plan.

The three basic body types for male and female are: Endomorph, Ectomorph and Mesomorph.

Here’s a definition about each body type to give further clarification:

Endomorphs: The naturally big boned person characterized with a round face, a soft and flabby body in general, wide hips, bigger waist, slow metabolism and high number of fat cells. This type usually finds weight loss a constant struggle. Its may mean some extra time at the gym.

Ectomorphs: The skinny person with a linear appearance, small muscles, ultra fast metabolism, low body fat, narrow shoulders, hips and waist. Doesn’t usually have to worry about weight loss. Don’t you just hate those types of people. Eat all you want and don’t gain a pound. I used to be like that, but as I have aged, I have noticed putting on a few extra pounds and it taking longer to get off.

Mesomorphs: The naturally muscular person with wide shoulders, small waist, athletic build, low body fat percentage with an increase metabolism.

We all display some characteristics from each body type, although one type will usually dominate. You may think that you fit into more than one category. This may well be true as it is extremely rare for an individual to display all of characteristics for their body type. It is the dominant type of characteristics which determine the actual body types assigned to us.

It still is about how many calories we consume and burn in a given day. In fact whatever the body type, if we want to achieve weight loss we need to create a negative energy balance or a calorie deficit. The number of calories we cut from our intake needs to be sufficient enough in order to see some results fairly quickly. So if we begin a new diet by cutting our calorie intake by about 500 per day we will lose weight over the course of a week or two. However just cutting calories is now not deemed to be a sensible way to approach weight loss

So what do you do and what happens to our bodies when we choose to cut calories? During a calorie deficit our bodies still require the same amount of energy so they start to use up energy stores to make up for this 500 calorie deficit. However, as our bodies inevitably use up extra proteins for energy AND to maintain normal protein synthesis, we end up with a net loss of total protein. This results in a gradual loss of lean muscle, and this is the start of a lowered metabolism and consequently a slower weight loss

One thing to keep in mind while losing weight is related to exercise. The more you incorporate cardio and weights, your body will likely lose fat, but you will also probably gain some muscle mass. Just keep in mind, muscle loss may not be obvious when looking in the mirror because the body will take it from other, less priority areas and not just from our skeletal muscles. The stomach is a classic area where protein is broken down for use, as there’s less need for a large stomach capacity because we have lowered our food intake. Ever noticed how we can no longer eat those big meals we once used to eat before dieting?

Although you may need to cut down on the amount of food you it is vitally important you don’t drastically cut your calories as you may be doing your body and your weight loss more harm than good. Just stick to a balanced approach to whatever goal you set for yourself.
